Meet Dr. Kia

Dr. Marquia “Kia” Whitehead, educator, life and career coach, and entrepreneur, is a native of Franklin, LA. She has overcome health issues, teen pregnancy, single parenting, adoption, and many other obstacles. Educationally, she attended Nicholls State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, with a minor in Marketing; Northwestern State University, receiving a Master of Arts in English, with a focus in Linguistics and Writing; and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, receiving a Doctorate in Education, specifically Educational Leadership, with a concentration in Higher Education. Her study focused on African American women in leadership roles at higher education institutions. Additionally, she received a Graduate Certification in Professional Writing. 

 

Starting her professional, post-graduate career as an English Professor at Louisiana State University, she has since served in several leadership roles. Her experience expands beyond Louisiana. She has traveled all over the United States, teaching ACT Prep to high school students and professional development for other teachers and an Adjunct English Professor at various colleges and universities, including South Louisiana Community College and Louisiana State University – Eunice. Additionally, Dr. Kia is the owner of her own writing business, which provides writing services, life and career coaching, motivational speaking, dissertation coaching, workshops, tutoring, and much more. In 2017, the 10-year anniversary of her high school graduation, she served as the commencement speaker at her alma mater Franklin Senior High School. She is a well- known speaker, conference presenter, and highly sought after for her knowledge in various subject areas. 

 

Dr. Whitehead previously published in The Southern View Magazine, worked with the Baton Rouge Fashion Week as a writer, and featured as a cover story for the Courageous Women’s Magazine. In addition, she has received several awards and acknowledgements for her abilities in teaching, writing, and overall philanthropy. Her passion consists of literacy in minority, disenfranchised communities, diversity and inclusion, communication, and women’s empowerment. When asked why she continues to pursue her passion, she states, “I now realize that everything I have been through was not for me. It was for everyone that I would meet in the future. My story is a testimony that God can, and He will!”

 

Although she wears many hats, Dr. Whitehead will also be an educator at heart in several capacities.

Assisted with the creation of Louisiana State University’s Pre-Scholars Academy for first time freshman: the Pre-Scholars Academy consisted of lower achieving, first-generation students who were fully admitted after completing the program.
